Top comic sales of 2009

Thanks to diamondcomics.com who have published a list of top comics, publishers and graphic novels we can see just how popular some comics were last year.

At the top of the publishers last year with a 45% market share was Marvel Comics followed by DC comics with 32% which is surprising as when you look at the top 10 comic sales Marvel only held four of the titles compared to DC’s six. It could be down to the hugely successful Amazing Spider-Man #583 featuring Obama which sold over half a million copies in five printings. Obama has also recently been short listed for a Deadpool comic by Geek Girl writer Sam Johnson.

The top 10 graphics novels from 2009 have a few titles such as Fables vol 1 and Walking Dead vol 1 which I wouldn’t be surprised are there this year too, Others includes the Walking Dead which is being made into a television series at the moment.

The top selling graphic novel of 2009 was… Watchmen, not too surprising mainly due to the success of the film, general availability and it being a pretty kick ass graphic novel.
