"This is going to be one of the best comics you read this year"
/5 Reviewed by Adi MursecI don’t know how Mark Millar manages to write so many epic original series, right now I can’t think of any other comic creator with so many series in print at once this year or ever. The quality of his work this year has been fantastic too. One of my favorites was the return of Nemesis and now we’ve got the return of The Magic Order for its fifth series.
If you haven’t read any Magic Order before I’d highly recommend picking up this one, although they are all connected they are also fairly self-contained so this is a great jump on point, and if you want to go back and read some of the previous Magic Order comics you shouldn’t have too many spoilers.
They are set in a supernatural world that follows Cordelia Moonstone, she’s like John Constantine meets Jessica Jones as she goes around solving supernatural disturbances and likes to take control of any situation.
Being a Mark Millar series they are aimed at a more mature audience but other than that I think if you like a break from the typical superhero genre and want to dip your toes into an epic supernatural/horror series for a few months you can’t do better than The Magic Order at the moment.
Issue 1 starts with a great pace, again even if you haven’t read any in the series before you’d probably be fine picking this one up. One thing I loved about this issue is just how well Matteo Buffagni’s artwork has complimented Millars writing, there is a log of synergy in the panels and it’s one of the issues I found myself wanting to reread to see if I could pick out any extra hidden details in the story or artwork as it leaves you with a bit of a mystery.
One thing I love about The Magic Order is although it tends to follow the protagonist Cordelia each series is a back story of the new antagonist, they are always so characterized even by just their design but you also get to see so much of their backstory and motivation in each issue instead of some random dude that just wants to take over the world for some reason.
This one looks like a bit of a crime thriller that will keep you gripped from page to page.
