"A great jump on point to catch up with the most psychopathic comic villain ever created"
/5 Reviewed by Adi MursecDue for release 24th July 2024 Nemesis Rogues Gallery brings back one of Mark Millars most controversial creator-owned characters.
Nemesis started in 2010 when it was first published at Marvel, later it was published under Image and the latest series Rogues Gallery is published under Dark Horse Comics.
From day one Nemesis has had very mixed reviews, I have to admin that when I first read Nemesis back in 2010 I wasn’t sure what to make of it at the time. It looked like a typical superhero comic but was far from it. I honestly think anyone who gave it a bad review over the years might have missed the mark and didn’t get it. To appreciate it you need to start reading it with an open mind, it’s not Batman, well it is but only if Batman was a super-criminal psychopath.
The story follows a guy called Nemesis or Matthew Anderson if you want to get on the wrong side of him. He lived in a world that could be considered a very alternative reality to Batman, to be honest, I think he looks more like Space Ghost but let’s go with Batman for now. There are a lot of likenesses to the caped crusader, Nemesis is rich as anything, he has a butler and even gets fixed up in something that looks like Ra’s al Ghul Lazarus pit.
To read the latest addition to the Nemesis comics Rogues Gallery it might help to have read some of Millars previous Nemesis comics but you don’t need to. Issue one is a great jump on point for the series. You find out what kind of world the comic is set in, and you get to know a lot about Matthew Anderson and what motivates him in the first few pages alone.
Although Mark Millar is highly respected as an author I still think he’s very under-appreciated, He’s contributed to some amazing mainstream characters like Superman and The Avengers but really shines when he has full creative control under his creator-owned series. Everyone knows Millars work for Kick-Ass which was pretty amazing and I loved his recent work with The Magic Order which again was so easy to read even if you haven’t read all the books in the series or read them years ago. Whenever I pick up one of Marks new books I get excited to just explore the worlds he creates in his comics.
All that being said you need to go into Rogue Gallery knowing this is the darker side of Millers imagination, it’s rough, and violent but also very creative and pulls no punches when it comes to shocking readers. Nemesis is just the ultimate comic book villain.
The artwork in Nemesis Rogues Gallery is by Valerio Giangiordano who in recent years has been doing a lot of work for Marvel. I love how Millar manages to attract and work with some of the most talented artists in the industry while working on his creator-owned works.
One thing I love about the artwork is the consistent quality throughout. it’s like every panel is worthy of being cover art.
I really can’t wait to see where Nemesis Rogues Gallery is going to end up, I’m hooked from issue 1.
