Superman movie review

"You're not human unless you cry at least once during this movie"

5/5 Reviewed by Adi Mursec

This film has been a long time in the making and it shows. It’s near enough perfection so much so that’s its topped my charts for best comic book movie making Dark Knight a close runner up.

It’s hard to say what’s made this movie so good, the cast is great, the story and it had just enough of a roster of comic book characters too but I think overall it’s help realign the comic book movie genre. It’s just what we need to kick off a new age of DC comics movies, it’s grounded enough that the characters are relatable by their personality but the way they integrate them all in this full of fantasy world I don’t think we’ve seen it before.

The movie boasts a full roster of Superman’s closest friends and family from Lois and his dog Krypto and something we haven’t seen done for a while, both his parents. He’s not constantly brooding over all the things he’s lost, he actually seems grateful for what he has got which is a nice change.

Comparing David Corenswet to Christopher Reeve or Henry Cavill would probably be a mistake as they are all great on screen Superman actors and all had different roles to play which they did in their own ways which suited each movie. Henry did an amazing job but I don’t think we got to see his version evolve enough since he only had the one solo movie which covered the origin, Reeves was very defining for the character and set the bar high but his movies didn’t get to embrace the wider DC universe. These are things Gunn has learnt from and in his take he’s kicked off a few years into Supermans career, we don’t need half a movie going over his origin again/ Reeves did an amazing job of that.

One thing I really liked about this movie is the range of emotion David Corenswet brought to the role, we see Superman and Clark Kent both as their best and worst with ups and downs and he still manages to keep his humanity and compassion.

In this take on Superman we get a bit of a tease of just how big the DC universe is with Guy Gardner’s Justice Gang, it’s a working title for the group which includes Hawk Girl and Mister Terrific. Maybe we will see them turn into the Justice Society at some point but at this point it’s just great to see Superman have some backup. It’s a great setup for DC Studios and I think the only problem they have at the moment is the ability to make movies of this quality at pace, if they can figure that out I’d say they can print money.

In fact I haven’t written a movie review in a long time as I had lost the inspiration but Superman has really reignited that, it’s like when the first Iron Man movie came out of nowhere and sparked something, I don’t think we’ve had many movies like Iron Man 1 and The Dark Knight but this is one of them.

The movie isn’t just inspired by comic book villains, we’re in a world now where we have real life villains even more diabolical and untrustworthy in real life. The movies story is obviously based on real world issues that are all too familiar. Having a movie written like this really exposes the truths of the world we live in.  It’s sad we don’t have a real Superman to tidy up some of the mess the world is in but it’s inspiring to see how much of a difference one person could make.

Saying that Nicholas Hoult played an amazing Lex Luthor and the revelry between him and Superman is amazing it took me right back to those conversations between Reeve and Hackman in the OG movies. The chemistry between all the characters was spot on, you really got a feeling for their personalities even though some only had a few lines in the movie and felt like you knew them for a long time.

Personally I’d love to see a few movies with an evil Lex and maybe a solo Lex Luthor movie where has a bit of redemption and we see him team up with Superman in his super suit to fight a bigger villain, if we will get to see that one day is all up to DC Studios.

Overall I think James Gunn’s take on Superman has really started something great, I’ve had a subscription to Action Comics for a long time and I think they have brought all the best elements of Superman to the screen. I can’t wait for the upcoming Supergirl movie it can’t come out soon enough.

One thing I’d love to see DC Studios do that Marvel Studios hasn’t is release the directors cut, I’d love to see more, even if it was a 6 hour cut of the movie.
