Most comic book movies being released nowadays are trying to dull down action scenes and become family friendly movies, the days of Blade, The Punisher and even the Dark Knight were coming to an end to make way for more Disney type movies.
Not the case for Deadpool. Director Tim Miller wants this film to join that list of R/18+ movies which stands the test of time and has made Deadpool extra adult only combining sex and a whole lot of violence.
Due to this the movie has already been banned in China which accounts for roughly 20% of the worlds population and a lot of cinema tickets for the comic book movie industry. Although movies in China don’t usually have ratings the movie board which approves all import films the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) has deemed the movie has too much sex and violence. So much that making an edit which would make it acceptable would also make it have too many plot problems. There goes that petition to make a kid safe version too.
With or without a Directors cut the DVD sales are going through the roof. Same with the piracy but I think the cinema tickets in any country brave enough to show it will make up for those.
One thing I love about this is that 20th Century Fox have really shown how much they respect the source material and fans by making this Deadpool movie an adult only experience. They dulled down the Wolverine movie so much it lacked any decent action or substance, a Wolverine movie by name only. They don’t want to make that mistake again.
An R rated comic book movie will never happen with WB or Disney behind the camera, I hope 20th Century Fox keep up this trend, do a sequel or five and maybe play with some more X-Men spin-off movies. With this approach to making comic book movies Fox could easily take over the whole comic book industry in a few years.
