"A must watch for any fan of Jason David Frank, A final goodbye to the fans"
/5 Reviewed by Adi MursecLegend of the White Dragon was Jason David Franks last and most personal project. It’s the perfect movie for someone who grew up watching the Power Rangers and wanted something a bit more edgy with some really adult themes.
The project was originally aimed to be funded on Kickstarter by fans of both Jason David Frank and Aaron Schoenke from Bat in the sun. Both have worked on projects together prior to this along with some other members of the cast.
Those wanting a straight up Power Rangers type movie might be a bit disappointed, there isn’t a team of super-heroes fighting a dude in a costume and there are also unfortunately no giant robots which was a little disappointing but this movie really didn’t need them.
The story follows a major battle with the White Dragon and an ancient looking villain named Ashtagor. During the battle a city is destroyed and over a thousand people are left dead. After this the White Dragon is blamed and has to go into hiding. During that time a victim who lost his family in the battles aftermath plans his revenge partly motivated by Ashtagor.
Overall it’s a pretty cool movie and. I highly recommend a watch if you were a fan of any of Jasons previous works or a general Power Rangers fan growing up.
The movie has loads of amazing actors such as the late Michael Madsen (Kill Bill, Reservour Dogs), David Ramsey (John Diggle from the CW shows) and one of my favorite actresses and stunt performers Amy Johnston (Lady Bloodfight, Accident Man).
During production the movie had a lot of set backs from delays in production to the unfortunate death of its star Jason David Frank. But thankfully the production team managed to finish the movie against the odds and they did a great job of it too. I just wish David was still here to see the finished product he’d put so much of himself into.
For the production quality it’s pretty impressive considering the budget. I see a lot of people might compare the graphics to movies like Guardians of the Galaxy or other Marvel productions and it’s not there with its special effects but considering the budget and resources I think the team behind it did an amazing job. In most places the story and acting are more than enough to carry the new story and do some impressive world building. To be honest it’s better than a lot of comic book movies I’ve seen that have had 100 times the budget.
This movie will unfortunately likely be a one off due to two of the stars passing but there is still a lot of potential to expand the universe. We still have the main villain Ashtagor plotting more destruction, Maybe he could bring back Detective Beaumont as a new Dragon Prime and we’d see her battle her demons and turn the power to good. Or even a recast of Erik Reed but I think it would be very big shoes to fill considering Jason’s impact on the world.
Overall I loved this movie, don’t go into it expecting a triple A huge budget production but see it knowing how much creativity and and hard work went into this independent movie. It is a lot of fun to watch and has some amazing scenes. I just wish there was more to jump into.
