"The first episode is so good you forget that Batman exists"
/5 Reviewed by Adi MursecHBO Max’s upcoming series The Penguin is an exciting addition to the expanding DC Universe, serving as a spin-off from The Batman (2022). Centered on Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. The Penguin, the series dives deeper into the rise of one of Gotham City’s most notorious crime lords. Colin Farrell reprises his role as the disfigured yet charismatic criminal, building on his standout performance from the film.
The show explores Cobblepot’s ascent in Gotham’s power structure following the chaos left by the fall of Carmine Falcone, and the vacuum it creates within the city’s underworld. Set in the gritty, noir-inspired Gotham introduced by director Matt Reeves, The Penguin promises a dark, character-driven narrative that blends crime drama and psychological thriller elements.
With an emphasis on Cobblepot’s ruthless ambition and complex personality, the series portrays the transformation of a once-small-time player into a dominant force in Gotham’s criminal empire. Farrell’s performance, supported by a strong cast, is anticipated to bring depth and nuance to the character, moving beyond the caricature often associated with Penguin’s past portrayals in the Batman franchise.
While the series is not directly a sequel to The Batman, it shares the same gritty, realistic tone and operates in the same cinematic universe. For fans of Gotham’s dark corners and complex villains, The Penguin promises to be a thrilling exploration of power, ambition, and the dark side of Gotham City.
