Avengers Infinity War Part 1 Review

"The most unexpected comic book movie ever"

5/5 Reviewed by Adi Mursec

I think over the last 20 years we’ve seen a massive evolution of comic book movies, they have gone from the lowest budget movies to the highest and biggest block buster movies breaking records and raising the bar year on year. Infinity War has raised the bar so high I’m still a little bit in shocked.

For a while we went through this phase of a comic book hero getting a movie and the villain being a really just a bad version of the good guy with similar powers, someone close to the hero being killed off before the last act and not knowing if there would be a sequel or not. The Marvel studios movies have moved away from this template for a few reasons, they can invest whatever finances they want into the movie as they know they will get a lot more back and there is a guaranteed sequel. I think this gives them so much more creative freedom now to do just about anything they want.

There has been a lot of hype around Infinity War and at first I didn’t think it would live up to it, the main reason is that I walked into it thinking I knew roughly what would happen also it’s not the first time we’ve seen the Avengers team up, this is the third Avengers movie and the last two were cool but not movies that lived up to the hype or the quality of some of the solo movies.

I feel that Infinity War is a real turning point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they have totally broken the mould and delivered the most unexpected movie they could. I’m not sure what they have planned for part two but I can’t wait to see these movies back to back in one epic sitting.

In terms of my favourite comic book movies Infinity War is up there with Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and “Captain America: Civil War” which all seem to have the same tone and amazing directions. I think it’s all the work the directors Joe and Anthony Russo put in to make the movies appeal to such a wide audience. Another thing I’ve recently found out is they are also written by the same writers Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely. The whole team have a very good track record and I hope they keep making movies for Marvel in the next phase of the franchise.  I think it must be so tough to make a movie appeal to such a wide audience, even to people who haven’t read a single comic before. They have really brought out the best bits of these characters.

You have some amazing scenes throughout the movie, we’ve seen Thanos in movies before but only a cameo here and there. Here we see him have a fist fight with the Hulk and win within one of the opening scenes and if that doesn’t establish the threat in the movie I don’t know what will.

The pace of the movie seems so well setup, I love the way all the characters are split up into smaller teams and it seamlessly switches between them. Technically we haven’t seen them all team up just yet but when we do I wonder what the fight scene could be like, maybe they will keep them segmented into these smaller teams to hit Thanos from different angles.

The whole movie felt like a really epic first act which I guess in a way it was in a way with it being part one but it’s interesting to see how they decided to split up the whole plot between the movies. This one is the first Marvel movie where we see the heroes pretty much beaten down and bloody beyond repair.

There are a few Avengers missing from this movie, I’m guessing it’s because they are going to be in movies between part 1 and part 2. Ant-Man has his sequel coming up soon with “Ant-man and Wasp” we also have the Captain Marvel movie coming up soon too and I think they may want to save her introduction for then. Although she does get paged by Nick Fury in the post credits scene. Hawkeye also gets a mention but doesn’t appear in this movie either.

We have seen on set pictures of Ant-Man aka Paul Rudd on set which most people assumed would be the in Infinity War part one but it looks like they have already filmed scenes for the second movie.

At some point I wonder if the team at Marvel Studios ever considered making Infinity War a three or four parter. It’s just so action packed I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie like it.

Some of my best bits included:

I do love to speculate where the next movie will go and I have a few predictions for the second movie:

Overall this movie feels like a real game changer for comic book movies, I can’t wait for Part 2 and to see where the Marvel cinematic universe is next year.

Avengers Infinity War Part 2 is due out next year on May 3rd 2019 but considering this movie came out earlier then planned I wouldn’t be surprised if they bring Part 2 out sooner.
